Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic factors limiting the growth and productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.), particularly in coastal areas and irrigated lands affected by seawater intrusion. This study aims to analyze the salinity tolerance potential of rice varieties from Indonesia and Vietnam through a literature review. Salinity tolerance mechanisms include ion exclusion, osmolyte accumulation, and increased antioxidant enzyme activity. The review findings indicate that Vietnamese rice varieties generally exhibit higher salinity tolerance compared to Indonesian varieties. This is attributed to genetic adaptations and the expression of specific genes that regulate ion homeostasis and free radical detoxification. This study provides valuable insights for the breeding of superior rice varieties that are more adaptive to extreme environmental conditions, especially in high-salinity soils.
